MARVAO WALKING TOUR | The Eagle´s Nest is a charming town with a remarkable history
Nobel Prize-winning author José Saramago wrote of the village, "From Marvão one can see the entire land ... It is understandable that from this place, high up in the keep at Marvão Castle, visitors may respectfully murmur, 'How great is the world'."
This tour invites you to explore one of the most well-kept medieval villages of Portugal. Surrounded by walls and 865 meters above sea level, Marvão surprises every visitor with its marvelous views on top of its vertical cliffs over neighboring country Spain, and the surrounding areas of São Mamede Natural Park.
A few years ago. emigration left the village almost deserted, but now the little white houses have been taken over by weekenders, remarkable artists and for tourist accomodation, which transformed tourism in the main economic activity due to the town's unusual beauty and its main festivals of classical music and the chestnut fair.
During your tour there, you will have enough time to immerse yourself in the town’s rich history, visit the old church of Santa Maria, which houses an excellent museum of archaeological finds and local artefacts, and Marvão's imposing castle. We'll walk in its well-preserved historical center characterized by centuries-old houses with white-washed facades, and soak up the atmosphere of this little jewel of Portugal.
